To introduce reporters and newsroom leaders to solutions journalism, the Press Club of Long Island is offering a free virtual workshop via Zoom on Thursday, September 29, at 7 p.m. led by PCLI board member and education chair J.D. Allen with members of the Solutions Journalism Network. Register to receive the Zoom link.
Solutions journalism is an approach to reporting that focuses on social problems and what is being done to address them. It’s rigorous, evidence-based reporting that gets to the bottom of which approaches are effective and which fail to alleviate the problems. This workshop will explain how individual journalists can practice solutions journalism and how newsrooms can adopt solutions journalism into their culture.
Michael Davis manages a 12-state southern region for Solutions Journalism Network and oversees the Charlotte Journalism Collaborative. Now based in North Carolina, Davis is a journalist, producer and author at digital news sites, magazines, newspapers and broadcasting outlets in New York, Chicago, Baltimore and beyond. He is the author of the New York Times best-seller “Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street” and co-executive producer of the feature-length documentary adapted from his book.
Mikhael Simmonds is the director of regions at Solutions Journalism Network, working with news outlets and institutions to produce high-quality rigorous reporting about responses to social problems. Based in Brooklyn, Simmonds has a background in multimedia and international reporting for news and nonprofit organizations. He co-founded Harlem Focus, a multimedia blog/media lab used as a learning tool at the City College of New York.
J.D. Allen is a board member at the Press Club of Long Island. He is the managing editor at WSHU Public Radio, and host of the climate podcast “Higher Ground.” A native Long Islander, Allen has reported for public radio stations across the Northeast. He’s a lecturer at Stony Brook University, Quinnipiac University and Suffolk County Community College.
