Even though the Press Club of Long Island has canceled its in-person awards ceremony again this year due to the pandemic, the organization continues to honor the best journalism in the region with its 2021 PCLI Media Awards.
There are winners and finalists in more than 100 categories, and the full list is available below.
This year’s winners and finalists are being featured on digital and social media platforms. We ask that you post congratulatory mentions of your colleagues’ and companies’ achievements using the hashtag #PCLIAwards. Please post photos and share links and words of encouragement so we can highlight the important work being done on Long Island. Also, if you’d like, send in a video shoutout about your win to dderosa1@optonline.net that we’ll compile for a highlight reel.
The Robert W. Greene Public Service Award was awarded to Newsday and Hofstra University’s Long Island Advocate. In the large media division, Newsday won for its investigative coverage of the toxic plume in Bethpage, while Hofstra won for its investigative series covering the opioid crisis on Long Island.
William Cullen Bryant (1794–1878), the longtime editor of the New York Evening Post who made his home at Cedarmere in Roslyn Harbor — where PCLI honored his legacy by placing a historic marker in 2017 — was inducted into the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame.
The 2021 James Murphy Cub Reporter of the Year is Nicole Alcindor from the Long Island Herald. Hofstra University’s Damali Ramirez and Stony Brook University’s Maya Brown are the PCLI College Scholarship winners. And Zach Dowdy and Cathrine Duffy are this year’s Phil Spahn Memorial Award winners for running the Robert W. Greene Summer Institute for High School Journalists at Stony Brook University.

In order to streamline the process, we are also asking that all duplicate orders of plaques and certificates be placed by June 15.
