Dear Press Club of Long Island Member,
It’s Scott Brinton, PCLI president. This week we are calling on Governor Cuomo to include journalists on the list of eligible recipients of the Covid-19 vaccine. Below is our open letter to him. We are encouraging our members to individually send the governor their own letters.
To send your own message to the governor, use this state form found here.
You can always copy and paste the letter below and any thoughts that you like.

To New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo:
The Press Club of Long Island, a chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, is writing to request that members of the media be made eligible immediately for the COVID-19 vaccine.
Many of us have been on the front lines since the first day of the pandemic. Journalists have been reporting from hospitals, interviewing seriously ill New Yorkers and attending crowded news conferences. The risk has been high, day after day and month after month. While we would not want to jump ahead of the elderly and New Yorkers with pre-existing health conditions, who rightfully deserve to be vaccinated first, it is poor health policy that other public-facing workers (those working for nonprofits, working at hotels, etc.) are already eligible while we are not.
While we are concerned about becoming ill ourselves, we also worry about contracting the virus and unknowingly infecting others, as we are around many people on a daily basis.
Journalists should be considered essential workers eligible for the vaccine under federal guidelines: “United States Statutes. Title 42. THE PUBLIC HEALTH AND WELFARE Chapter 68. DISASTER RELIEF. Subchapter IV. MAJOR DISASTER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM S§ 5189e. Essential service providers.”
