Press Club Hosts Community Journalism Forum

The Press Club of Long Island hosted its second annual talk, “Why a Community Newspaper Is a Great Place to Start — and Make — a Career in Journalism,” at Stony Brook University on April 5.

The panel featured two of Long Island’s most distinguished community journalists, along with an SBU graduate who recently began their careers at community papers.

The Speakers

  • Denise Civiletti: Denise Civiletti, co-founder, publisher and editor of the community news website RiverheadLOCAL.
  • Joseph Shaw: Joseph Shaw, executive editor of the Press News Group, publishers of The Southampton Press and The East Hampton Press, and the website
  • Bridget Downes: Bridget Downes, reporter for the Long Beach Herald since late 2016 and earned her bachelor’s degree from Stony Brook University, where she studied journalism.
  • Moderator: Scott Brinton: Scott Brinton, the Press Club of Long Island’s vice president and executive editor of Herald Community Newspapers and in Garden City.
