The Press Club of Long Island has had its second historical marker placed, this time in Huntington to commemorate the spot where Walt Whitman first published The Long-Islander in 1838.
Press Club board members were joined by U.S. Rep. Steve Israel, Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Councilman Mark Cuthbertson, and representatives from the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association on May 31 in dedicating the marker. It is located in the Gerard Street municipal parking lot, not far from where the barn where Whitman set up his press.
“The press club continues to make strides with recognizing historic journalism landmarks on Long Island,” said PCLI President Chris R. Vaccaro. “
Petrone, in brief remarks, thanked the Press Club of Long Island for providing the marker.
The Press Club also received financial assistance from the Zimmerman / Edelson public relations firm and the law firm of McCarthy and Reynolds.
