For the first time in its history and of any professional chapter in the Society of Professional Journalists, the Press Club of Long Island is pleased to announce a Learning Disability Scholarship to be given at its annual media awards dinner in June.
We are so pleased to offer a new scholarship this year for students who have learning disabilities, but want to pursue a career in journalism, said PCLI President Dominick Miserandino. It’s part of our core mission to support students who care about communications and journalism and we’re looking forward to giving out this award at the dinner.
Eligibility is limited to college students or high school seniors in or entering a college journalism program having a learning disability as defined by the Learning Disabilities Association of America.
Applicants must submit an essay showing how their learning disability did not dissuade them from pursuing their interest in journalism.
One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded. A nomination letter must be submitted by the student’s adviser, editor, station manager or professor.
Awards in the Scholarships division must be mailed to
competition co-chair Chris R. Vaccaro, Adjunct Professor, Department of Journalism, Hofstra University, Dempster Hall, Hempstead, N.Y. 11549.
