The Press Club of Long Island is sponsoring the 2012 Society of Professional Journalists Region I Spring Conference to be held at Stony Brook University on March 23-24.
It is expected to attract more than 100 journalism professionals and student journalists from Maine to Pennsylvania for a day and a half of programming at the Charles B. Wang Center and an opening reception Friday night at the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook.
The luncheon on Saturday will feature a keynote speaker, presentation of Mark of Excellence awards and an auction to raise money for the SPJ Region I Fund that supports journalism activities in the Northeast.
On Friday afternoon and Saturday morning and afternoon, there will be 12 or more panels and professional development workshops. Topics will include:
*How to get a job in journalism
*Mobile journalism
*Music journalism
*Video storytelling
*First Amendment legal issues
*Turning journalism assignments into books
*Celebrity journalism
*Newspaper redesign
Besides the
support already being provided by Stony Brook University, PCLI will be seeking sponsorships from media organizations to cover the costs of meals, coffee breaks and the opening night reception. We will also be preparing a program booklet that will provide opportunities for advertising support.
