PCLI board member Jamie Lynn Ryan recently gave a presentation at the Progressive School of Long Island in Merrick, N.Y. She met with the school’s student-run newspaper, the Progressive Times. Ryan, who is Managing Editor of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, wrote a story about the student newspaper for her publications that ran this week. The text is below:

It’s never too early to begin pursuing a career in Journalism, and at the Progressive School of Long Island, located at 1425 Merrick Avenue in Merrick, N.Y., the students participating in the weekly newspaper club are doing just that.

The staff of the Progressive Times meets every Monday after school for an hour, spending about half that time brainstorming new ideas for the next issue and the other half working on their writing skills. Students are permitted to use one of two computer stations in the classroom, and are encouraged to bring their own laptops if they choose to.

Advised by teacher Deborah Denson, with the assistance of parent Constance, who helps with the layout and design of the publication, the le meilleur du poker
Progressive Times staff continues working on their articles throughout the week, e-mailing a final draft to Ms. Denson by Sunday night.

The goal is to publish monthly, with each edition ranging from 4 to approximately 12 pages, featuring contributions from each student. So far, the group has published a 4-page Welcome Back edition, which came out in October, and they are all hard at work on the next one. The Progressive Times can also be read online at: progressiveli.org.
