LI Journalism Hall of Famer, Les Payne, Dies

Longtime Newsday journalist Les Payne, a Pulitzer Prize winner who was a champion for racial equality, died unexpectedly Monday night at his home in Harlem, his family said. He was 76.

Payne was inducted to the Long Island Journalism Hall of Fame in 2016. He worked at Newsday from 1969-2006 and won a Pulitzer Prize in 1974 for his work on a 33-part series titled “The Heroin Trail.”
