PCLI had historic Newsday sign placed in Hempstead

The Press Club of Long Island initiated a project that saw a historic marker placed in the Village of Hempstead that recognized the spot where Newsday was first printed in 1940.

During a ceremony on April 14, members of local government, Newsday officials and Press Club board members met to commemorate the unveiling of the historic sign.

image (1)Newsday has been a dominant force in Long Island media for more than half a century and we’re proud the Press Club of Long Island has played a part in helping to mark the location where the newspaper was founded,” PCLI President Chris R. Vaccaro said. “One of our tasks as an organization is to pay tribute to history, and when it comes to Long Island media, this is an exceptional location.”

The historical marker sign features an image of Alicia Patterson operating the press on the first edition of Newsday, as well as brief historical context outlining the newspaper’s beginnings on September 3, 1940 at the property at 283 Main Street in Hempstead. The property currently houses part of an automobile dealership, which ironically was its original use prior to Newsday’s move there.

“We’re proud to recognize this historical location in our township,” Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino said. “Newsday’s first edition ran on the presses in the Town of Hempstead, and after 75 years, the daily newspaper remains a mainstay each day for many of our residents at newsstands, in front of their homes and now on their smartphones and tablets.”

“On behalf of the Village of Hempstead, I am proud to recognize Newsday’s beginning right here on Main Street,” Hempstead Village Mayor Wayne J. Hall said. “It is a part of our rich history. As we move forward with the revitalization of the downtown area, it is important for us to remember our community’s past.”

The Press Club formed a historic studies committee that has spent time researching and working with local groups to make these moments possible. Stay tuned for more announcements from the committee soon!
