PCLI makes donation to scholarship fund, hopes members can do the same

schuman-jordan-405The Press Club of Long Island has made a sizeable donation to a new scholarship fund in honor of Jordan Schuman, a South Huntington native and Walt Whitman High School graduate who died in a car crash on Dec. 23.

The scholarship fund, which will benefit other young journalists, is being set up by Shuman’s family and administered by the New York Press Club Foundation.

Schuman, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Miami, had been working at WPDE, an ABC affiliate in South Carolina, as a multimedia reporter, since last March. She was on her way to see a friend in Charlotte, North Carolina, when the accident occurred.

Schuman grew up around the media world. Her mother, Peri Schacknow, is a radio anchor at CNBC in New Jersey, while her stepfather, Peter Schacknow, is a CNBC senior producer. They live in South Huntington.

Peri Schacknow created the #CheersToJordan hashtag to commemorate the life of her daughter, and hundreds of people have posted their thoughts.
