PCLI named SPJ Northeast Chapter of the Year

The Press Club of Long Island has been named the Society of Professional Journalists’ Chapter of the Year in the Northeast.

The honor was announced this week at the SPJ Excellence in Journalism convention in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Among the reasons Region 1 Director Luther Turmelle noted for picking PCLI for the honor was the club’s work in hosting this year’s SPJ Region 1 Spring Conference at Stony Brook University.

Turmelle said PCLI’s quick response to Long Island videographer Phil Datz’s arrest in 2011 was another reason for the honor. PCLI called on the Suffolk County Police Department to drop all charges against Datz, who was arrested for filming police response to a car chase on July 29. The charges were eventually dropped.

There was no other chapter that came to my mind when it came to nominating for local chapter of the year, Turmelle said.

We’re honored to be recognized for the board’s hard work this past year,” said PCLI President Dominick Miserandino. We’ve offered a diverse palette of programming for our membership and look forward to continuing our quest to educate and expand awareness of journalism issues throughout our region.
