PCLI president named SPJ Volunteer of the Month

Dominick Miserandino, president of the Press Club of Long Island, was named the Society of Professional Journalists’ Volunteer of the Month for July.

Miserandino was recommended by Region 10 Director Dana Neuts and President-Elect Sonny Albarado after they met him at the Scripps Leadership Institute in June.

SPJ President John Ensslin said he was impressed by the way Miserandino helped successfully organize this year’s SPJ Region 1 Spring Conference, which paid for itself through sponsorships.

“Dominick’s knack for creative organizational skills was evident throughout the conference, which featured perks ranging from free chocolate to discounted bus trips so that members throughout the region could afford to attend,” Ensslin said.

Here are a

few of his other accomplishments this year:

  • Miserandino organized and hosted a holiday party at his home as a way to get to know his board, brainstorm and plan for the year ahead
  • He also got Jerry Springer to do a program and donate $1,000 because he wanted to support journalism
  • Under Miserandino’s leadership, the chapter increased attendance at its holiday party and garnered more entries to its journalism contest by going online.

The volunteer of the month award is a way to call attention to SPJ’s unsung heroes, the people who give their time and effort to improve our local chapters.
