2012 PCLI Media Awards

This year, we’ve introduced a new web-based entry system hosted by www.betterbnc.com.

The final deadline for entries is February 26, 2012.

Below are directions for preparing and submitting entries online. If you have questions, contact Carol Pack at Carol.Pack@mac.com or David North at DavidNorthMedia@gmail.com  

IMPORTANT: Please make sure to use a recent version of Mozilla Firefox (3.0 or higher) or Internet Explorer and that you have an updated Adobe Flash Player.

 TO ENTER:

  1. Click on the “Enter” button at the bottom of the page.
    1. Select the appropriate News Organization and log on using bnc as your password. The next window will ask you to change your password and enter contact information. Note: If you are entering as an individual and not as part of a news organization contact Carol Pack at Carol.Pack@mac.com or David North at DavidNorthMedia@gmail.com and we will set you up as a contestant.
    2. On the “Contest” drop down menu, select 2012 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards Competition.
  2. Select Contest Info from the blue menu bar at the top of the page and click on “Instructions” to read the PCLI Rules for this competition.
  3. Submit Entries:

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU REVIEW THE COMPETITION RULES BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRIES.

  1. On the Manage Entries page, click Submit Entry (the 2nd option under “Welcome to the BNC”).
  2. Select the appropriate Category.
  3. Read the corresponding Category Note that will appear directly below the Category selection box, describing what is expected for the category’s entry content.
  4. Complete the Headline/Title field.
  5. Based on the type of entry, add content:
  1. To upload digital file attachments (other than audio/video), click Browse, navigate to the desired file, select Open, and click Upload. Allowed file types are PDF, DOC, TXT, JPG, GIF, and PNG. If more than one attachment is desired for this entry, repeat these steps. If you reach a point where you cannot add any more attachments to an entry, you may have reached the attachments limit, set by your contest administrator. Please keep file sizes to 5mb or less, to aid judges in accessing entry content.
  2. To add web/audio/video content, copy and paste the content’s web address into the provided Web URL field. To host your content online, either upload it to a free streaming content website (e.g. YouTube, Vimeo) or talk to your IT person about adding it to your station’s website. Please note: BNC has a 20 MB limit on uploading audio/video files so sending a link is preferred. Make sure the content will be accessible online throughout the contest and awards process (through mid-May). Here are some examples of free streaming content websites where you can upload audio and video content:

      Audio: www.kiwi6.com, www.tindeck.com

      Video: www.youtube.com, www.vimeo.com

IMPORTANT: Ensure that items are not behind a pay wall or a password-protected area. If they are, you must provide username/password info in the Comments section of your entry. Judges may disqualify your entry if work samples are inaccessible.

  1. ADD YOUR CURRENT SPJ MEMBER NUMBER IN THE COMMENTS BOX TO QUALIFY FOR A FREE ENTRY.
  2. Add Credits for those responsible for the entry content.
  3. Click Submit.
  4. Print a copy of the Official Entry Form Page.
  5. Submit another entry if applicable or click on Manage Entries link.
  6. On the upper right side of the page it will list the number of entries you have made. Below it, click on the Calculate Entry Fee link.
  7. The total due will be listed. Individual PCLI members who are entitled to their first entry free should deduct $20. from the total.
  8. On the lower left click on the Click here to pay link. You will be taken to the PCLI payment page.
  9. Select your preferred mode of payment.
  10. Once payment has been made, you will see a message that says: “Thank you for submitting your payment. Please note that any entries not paid for will not be considered.”

ENTRY FEES:

For current Press Club individual members:

  •  First entry FREE! (Must include SPJ member number on payment form; go to www.spj.org if you don’t know your membership number or to make sure your membership is current. Additional entries: $20 per entry.

Fee for non-member individuals:

  • $25 per entry

Fee for Organizations:

  • $30 per entry

Only individuals can be members of the Press Club of Long Island and are entitled to one free entry and subsequent member rates. Members may not submit entries for non-members at the member rate.

ALL-MEDIA AWARDS

Nominations for these special categories will be accepted February 25, 2012 through April 23, 2012.

  • No entry fee required for nominations in the All-Media Awards or Academic Awards categories.
  • All submissions require a nomination letter and the requested number of examples of the candidates work (depending on the type of award). Upload the nomination letter, samples and any other required materials.
  • Use the same steps listed above, except select 2012 Press Club of Long Island All-Media Awards on the “Contest” drop down menu.
