LI Press wins Greene Public Service Award

Christopher Twarowski and Joel Cairo of the Long Island Press were awarded the Robert W. Greene Public Service Award at the Press Club of Long Island Media Awards dinner on June 9 for their Toxic Time Bomb three-part investigative series and accompanying mini-documentary that exposed the conditions of Nassau County’s Cedar Creek and Bay Park sewage plants, which threatened the health and safety of workers inside these facilities, the environment and public at large.

The series sparked investigations into the plants’ mismanagement by local, state and federal agencies. Repair work has begun; non-functioning methane gas valves were replaced. Equipment orders are being fast-tracked. The superintendent of both plants was removed.
