Stony Brook Statesman has funding slashed, asks for support

This note was sent out by the Stony Brook Statesman, a student-run independent newspaper at Stony Brook University that recently had its funding drastically cut by the Stony Brook University student government, putting the paper’s future in jeopardy. The Statesman staff is asking for support from the journalism community and others interested in offering words of encouragement.

To All:

As you have probably heard by now, Statesman’s provisional budget for next year has been cut from $27,000 to $2,500. If this decision is not reversed by the Undergraduate Student Government, Statesman may not publish next semester. We need all hands on deck to help us. What we are asking for by tomorrow (Sunday) night is for ALL OF YOU to send us a brief statement saying why you joined statesman/how important it is to you/the campus and how sad you’d be if it closed. We are also asking for your head shot to be placed in the paper next to your quote and tell us how many semesters you have worked for Statesman and your position at the paper or you can just state that you are a friend of statesman or alum. Please help us! We can’t fight this alone!

SEND THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW!
