Verizon to start a local news operation

Long Island Business News reports that Verizon Communications will start a local news operation.

From the story:

Called FiOS 1, the station would be available to subscribers of Verizon’s FiOS fiber-optic television service, offering traffic and weather reports in addition to news coverage.

While Verizon refuses to comment about the station, sources say the New York-based telecom will rely on freelance journalists armed with video cameras. Many of them have already been spotted at local press conferences and events.

The operation is an apparent effort to compete with Cablevision’s News 12 Long Island, which is a major selling point for subscribers to stick with the cable company. Cablevision, by the way, also owns Newsday.

LIBN notes that Verizon has a FiOS 1 station in Washington, D.C.
